Character Man

by Jim Brochu
January 25 - February 15 2015

The first two shows of 2015 invite audiences to experience a true repertory program, with complementary works performed in the same theater on alternating days. The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe and Character Man will utilize the same design team and share essential technical elements, yet the theatre will be transformed from one night to the next to create a unique environment for each piece.

REGIONAL PREMIERE

Jim Brochu (Zero Hour, The Big Voice: God or Merman?) returns to Stages with his musical valentine to the Great White Way. Character Man is a salute to the memorable character actors of Broadway’s Golden Age, including Zero Mostel, Jack Gilford, Barney Martin and Brochu’s own mentor, two- time Tony Award winner David Burns. Packed with the iconic songs from Meredith Willson, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick and Stephen Sondheim, Character Man is part cabaret, part oral history and all heart.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe

by Jane Wagner
January 20 - February 15 2015

The first two shows of 2015 invite audiences to experience a true repertory program, with complementary works performed in the same theater on alternating days. The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe and Character Man will utilize the same design team and share essential technical elements, yet the theatre will be transformed from one night to the next to create a unique environment for each piece.

Denise Fennell (Sister from the Late Nite Catechism series) steps into a new pair—well, actually, many pairs—of shoes in Jane Wagner’s much acclaimed, award-winning one-woman comedy. Follow Trudy, a perceptive bag lady who has appointed herself the task of showing visiting extraterrestrials the variety of life on Earth, as she introduces dozens of quirky characters who seek a deeper understanding of art, love and their place in the world.

Directed by Kenn McLaughlin

Stupid Fucking Bird

by Aaron Posner, sort of adapted from 'The Seagull' by Anton Chekov
March 18 - April 12 2015

REGIONAL PREMIERE

Nominee: Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award, eight Helen Hayes Awards

Love, death, beauty, despair and one unfortunate seagull collide in this unabashedly provocative riff on Chekov’s classic. Con is a burgeoning playwright in love with his ingénue; his mother, an aging actress, is involved with a famous novelist; the novelist, in turn, is increasingly enchanted with Con’s girlfriend; and everyone else suffers on the sidelines. Chekhov’s characters still ruminate on love, revolution and the pursuit of happiness, but this time convention gets shot to hell.
